Edgeland Landscapes

Occasional series of Workshops, popping up throughout the Spring and Summer

Morning session 10.30am-12.30pm
Afternoon session 1.30-3.30pm

We will be looking for the magic in the marginal space beyond the residential in Happy Valley, Woodingdean; just off the footpaths; from within the hawthorns and – if there is a light drizzle – from beneath them. Happy Valley is to the east of Brighton on the Falmer > Rottingdean road, with a free car-park, (or easily accessible by the No.22 bus from the city centre – get off at the Brownleaf Road stop – or the No.2, Bottom of The Ridgeway stop).

The privileged view offered from the side of The Downs, is of Woodingdean’s mid-century fringes, the flat, goal-posted playing fields below and of darting rabbits and a myriad of birds that fly about the telegraph poles; all to the soundtrack of skylarks.

This session is stand-alone but you will have the opportunity to explore variety, technique and process. Graphite pencil will be available, but we will explore working with charcoal and pastel for creating atmosphere. You’ll be encouraged to experiment in an attempt to express weather, mood, memory and to convey a sense of place.

Come drizzle or shine, we’ll meet in the Happy Valley car-park. Led by practicing artists Rachael Adams, Pat Thornton and/or Robert Littleford.

Suitable both for those with experience and for beginners.

Please note: Materials and paper will be provided, but please do bring sketchbooks and/or favourite materials if you wish. It should also be mentioned, there are no toilets, but in the spirit of working plein-air, there is much privacy amongst the hawthorns!
